Bethel Alum and Umpire Open about Cancer Battle

Jeff Nelson ’87 has been a full-time Major League ump since 1999.

Major league umpire Jeff Nelson, a 1987 graduate of Bethel College (now Bethel University), has made public his recent diagnosis and battle with cancer. Nelson returned to work in early September after three months of treatment, and WCCO Online sports broadcaster Mike Max interviewed him at the Minnesota State Fair. Nelson was in town to work his first game back in action—a hometown match between the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals.  Max writes that Nelson “understands his journey is not over and he’s secured by faith, family, and friends.”
