Bethel Baseball Team Headed to Playoffs

For the first time in 12 years, the Bethel University baseball team is headed to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs with a sweep over Concordia College on Monday. The Royals finished the regular season 20-18 (11-9 MIAC) and were awarded the No. 3 seed in the upcoming tournament.

Prior to Monday’s double-header, Bethel was locked with three other teams for third place and the only assured way of making the playoffs was to win both games against the visiting Cobbers. The Royals not only swept Concordia, but won the first of two games last week against Carleton, which proved to be enough for a third place finish. In addition to an exceptional final week, Bethel defeated its opponents in six of its final 10 conference games.

The Royals will face the No. 2 seed, Saint John’s University, in the second game on Friday at 7 p.m. at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn. Earlier in the season, Bethel split with the Johnnies in a double-header 3-4, 4-1. In fact, against the three other tournament teams, the Royals have a 3-3 record and its three losses have been by a combined deficit of four runs.

The last squad in Bethel history to advance to the MIAC Playoffs came in 2000, in which the former team fell in its first two games of the tournament. The 2012 club looks to compete this weekend with a different outcome, as it pushes toward continued success.

Live stats and webcasts of all the weekend’s games will be available on the athletics website.
