North Memorial Health Hospital (Robbinsdale, MN)

 

Summer Intensive CPE North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, MN, is offering Summer CPE.  The unit will be a full-time, 11-week long unit of CPE that will run from May 30 to August 11th, 2023, with Certified Educator Kim Goodman and Certified Educator Candidate Chad Jones. Interns will serve as hospital chaplains and provide on-call chaplain coverage during daytime/evening hours. North is a Level 1 Trauma Center with staff chaplains in-house from 6:30 am to 12 midnight.  Chaplain residents provide overnight coverage. Sanford Health (North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota)

Sanford Health is proud to offer ACPE certified Clinical Pastoral Education to students in North
Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Clinical Pastoral Education is interfaith professional
education for ministry. CPE brings theological students and ministers/practitioners of all faiths
(pastors, priests, rabbis, imams, and others) into supervised encounters with people who are
suffering, who are isolated, and who are in crisis. The combination of hands-on ministry practice and
process education in a group-learning context allows CPE students to grow in their understanding of
their identity and authority as ministers and spiritual care practitioners. Sanford’s CPE program is
based out of Fargo, ND. Our ACPE Certified Educator, Rev. Gina Harvey, works with students
placed at clinical sites in Sanford Health Hospitals and Good Samaritan Society senior living
facilities. CPE students engage in meaningful work with people from all walks of life.

CPE Units Offered

Summer Intensive Level I/II ACPE units are conducted for 11 weeks, typically June-August. Students
engage in education and clinical work for 40 hours a week and may have on-call expectations,
depending on their clinical placement. Students will complete a minimum of 100 hours of
educational time and 300 hours of clinical service time during the course of the unit.

Upcoming Unit: Tuesday, May 20, 2023 through Saturday, August 12, 2023
Deadline to apply, April 1, 2023. Students are admitted on a rolling basis.

Fall/Winter Extended Level I/II ACPE units are conducted for 22 weeks, typically mid-October
through March. Students engage in education and clinical work for 20 hours a week and may have
on-call expectations, depending on their clinical placement. Students will complete a minimum of
100 hours of educational time and 300 hours of clinical service.

Sanford’s CPE Residency is housed Fargo, ND, a vibrant college town that offers a reasonable cost
of living, cultural diversity, and robust clinical opportunities. CPE residents are full-time Sanford
employees and receive a salary and benefits. (One previous unit of CPE preferred.)

M Health CPE Units and Residencies (Minnesota)

...are still available for M Health Fairview's CPE programs in the Twin Cities.

The 53-week residency program begins August 22, 2022, and concludes on August 31, 2023, and provides three units of CPE. The focus of the first unit is authority and identity as a spiritual care provider, the focus of the second is systems and groups, and the focus of the third is on leadership as a spiritual care professional. Public Chaplaincy: Care in the Public Square

"This unit is rethinking the spaces where chaplains function in the public domain. People who are in need of care are found within Municipal Courts, Public Hospitals, County Service Offices, Public Transportation, Park and Recreation Centers." This is a pilot program in Minneapolis.

"If you are interested in joining us in creating new opportunities for chaplains, and have a public site where you are interested in doing your clinical CPE hours, we are the program for you. Progressive curriculum, dynamic pedagogy, and caring supervision. National cohort meets online weekly. Students work locally in a public setting that is responsive to real community needs."

Online video group sessions, online individual supervision sessions, Canvas Learning Management System. "This online learning format is especially helpful for students who are not able to physically attend a traditional, in-person, face-to-face CPE program because of limited or no ACPE-accredited centers near their geographic location." ACPE accredited.

Sharp Healthcare - San Diego (California)

Sharp Healthcare is in the San Diego, CA area and provides extended units of CPE (internships) and residencies.  Extended units typically start in January. Full-time residencies usually start in late August and require one completed unit of CPE.

University of California - San Diego (UCSD) CPE (California)

UCSD will be providing CPE units during the following times and in the following ways:

UCSD accepts and reviews applications on a rolling basis, which means you are welcome to submit your application at any time. They recommend you check with the program by writing to cpe@health.ucsd.edu to determine if they are currently accepting applications for open spots or the waitlist.

To apply, complete the application at the ACPE website. This is the common application for all CPE programs. CPE faculty and program advisors will review your application and let you know whether or not an interview will be offered within 30 days of receiving your application and fee.

Please send the completed application to cpe@health.ucsd.edu. A $30 non-refundable application fee made payable to "UC Regents" is required to process all applications. Mail the application to:

San Diego VA-DoD CPE Center (California)

The San Diego VA-DoD CPE Center at the VASDHS is now accepting applications for our fall residency, which will begin September 2022. 

Class meets Mondays 0830-1330 and students are expected to work in an assigned clinic 15 hours/week over 20 weeks as well as meet with the educator 1:1 an hour each week. There is no application fee, unit fee, stipend, or vacation for the internship. However, students will have federal holidays off.

Classes will be online unless otherwise specified. Clinic work will be done in person.

Optage Hospice/Presbyterian Homes CPE Internships (Minnesota)

How CPE internships work with Optage Hospice:

  • Interns join our hospice and act as chaplains on our team, receiving task supervision/training from one of our Optage Hospice chaplains
  • CPE training/learning is provided currently through Sue Allers Hatlie
  • We usually host 3 interns per year (1 intern with each of Sue’s units – winter, summer, fall)
  • Our goal is to find individuals who are in agreement with our Pietistic Theological Framework, which drives our approach to spiritual care (Christ Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone) and who are not afraid to meet people where they are at, while also sharing the Gospel

Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area hospital CPE opportunities include Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Mercy and Unity Hospitals, St. Francis Regional Medical Center, United Hospital, and Allina Health Hospice. Per the Allina website, Abbott Northwestern and United hospitals work closely with Children's Hospitals and Clinics in caring for premature newborns to older teens on the same campus.

M Health/Fairview Health System (Minnesota)

"Our Clinical Pastoral Education training program is accredited by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education to provide Level I/II and Certified Educator training. Located in the Louise Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, our program follows an experiential education model through an intercultural and interfaith curriculum that is designed to prepare all trainees for Board Certification in Chaplaincy." The VA Northeast Ohio CPE program offers an 11-week, full-time CPE internship program, a 12-month residency after completing one CPE unit, and a CPE fellowship program.
