A California licensed marriage and family therapist since 1973, Olson opened his own private counseling center, Family Consultation Service during that same year. He has served as adjunct faculty at Bethel Seminary San Diego and Point Loma Nazarene University, prior to joining Bethel's full-time faculty in 1997. Though he has continuously supervised MFT interns since 1975, he is currently in the process of becoming an AAMFT Approved Supervisor and a CAMFT Certified Supervisor. Olson has published numerous magazine and journal articles as well as several books about adolescence, including his Gold Medallion-winning Counseling Teenagers. In addition to his ongoing MFT practice, administration and teaching at Bethel, Olson has traveled internationally, speaking professionally in Europe, Asia and Africa. He has also hosted his own radio talk show, Living Well, on KPRZ. His primary research interests are alienation and other issues of integration between Christian theology, spirituality, clinical theory and praxis.
