Global Engagement

Learning about the world around us is essential to the study of literature, writing, and journalism. By experiencing the stories, traditions, and diversity of the world firsthand we grow in our understanding of others and ourselves. This is why we place an emphasis on providing opportunities to study, live, and explore in off-campus programs:

Literature and Writing Around the Globe

In recent years the department has led January interim trips to Brazil, Japan, Egypt, and Israel to practice the art of travel writing and study other literary and cultural traditions.

The Textura Project

A photojournalistic January interim trip co-led by the Department of English and Journalism and the Department of Art and Design. This experience is an intimate exploration of a different culture, in which students write investigative pieces about local life and use those stories and the photos they collect to compile and design a magazine. The Textura magazine produced from the 2017 J-Term trip to Antigua, Guatemala won a Best of Show award from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) and two national design awards from the University & College Designers Association (UCDA).

NYC Semester

Journalism students can spend a fall or spring New York City Semester at The King’s College in downtown Manhattan. The program provides students with a full slate of classes that keep Bethel journalists on track to graduate while also promising a meaningful internship and networking possibilities throughout the city. Former Wall Street Journal reporter Paul Glader, a friend of Bethel, runs the program, which has hosted five BU journalists since the partnership began in 2015.

Los Angeles Film Studies Center (LAFSC)

Students interested in film as an art form are encouraged to spend a semester experiencing the film industry through internships in Hollywood, California at the Los Angeles Film Studies Center. There, they attend seminar classes on film industry operations and discuss the ethical challenges in the entertainment profession and film culture.
