Staff member position overview

The responsibility of a Welcome Week staff member is to ensure the successful transition of students into Bethel University at the beginning of both fall and spring semesters. This is accomplished through participation in various trainings and events starting mid-February and ending in the beginning of September. Each WW staff member is supervised by a committee head, the WW coordinators, and the associate dean for campus engagement.

Job functions

  • Serve on a WW committee and carry out various tasks specific to that committee. Review the detailed descriptions of the seven committees. Committees meet biweekly throughout the spring semester.
  • Attend mandatory events:
    • Core Group trainings: TBD
    • WW Staff Retreat: March 2-3, 2024
    • Workday: April 14, 2024
    • WW Fall Training: August 23-27, 2024
    • Welcome Week: August 28-September 1, 2024
  • Lead a core group of 15-20 incoming students during WW.
  • Help with the WW move-in process (unless you have a health concern).
  • Participate in the WW Show.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The time commitment for all of the above adds up to an average of one to two hours a week during spring semester. Anticipate working 150-160 hours during August 23-September 1, 2024. Knowing this before you apply is important!

Requirements

  • Be a current Bethel student (not studying abroad spring semester) who is enrolled for fall 2024
  • Return to campus on Friday, August 23, 2024
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Have organization and time management skills
  • Be willing to complete behind-the-scenes work
  • Be responsible and provide dependable follow-through on all tasks with little direction
  • Understand and wholeheartedly embrace the Welcome Week commitment at the bottom of this page 

Committee head position overview

The responsibility of a committee head is to lead one of the seven WW committees. Each committee has its own key responsibilities. Committee heads are responsible for leading a small group of WW staff members to fulfill the goals and responsibilities of the committee.

Job functions

  • Lead a committee of eight to 12 peers that meets at least once every two weeks, starting after the WW Staff Retreat.
  • Fulfill all committee responsibilities (varies by committee).
  • Assist with Winter Welcome programming on January 30-January 31, 2024, for new students arriving for spring semester.
  • Complete occasional weekly assignments that will take from one to three hours.
  • Attend mandatory events:
    • A biweekly one- to two-hour meeting with the WW Leadership Team (coordinators, committee heads, and staff advisor) upon hiring (more meetings if necessary)
    • WW Leadership Retreat: January 28-29, 2024 (all day, overnight)
    • WW Staff Retreat: March 2-3, 2024
    • Workday: April 14, 2024
    • Student Leadership Retreat: TBD
    • WW Fall Training: August 21-27, 2024
    • Welcome Week: August 28-September 1, 2024
  • Help develop and implement spring training for all WW staff.
  • Create a sense of community within your committee and within WW staff in general.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The time commitment for all of the above adds up to an average of three to five hours a week during spring semester. Anticipate working 160-170 hours during August 14-25, 2024. Knowing this before you apply is important! 

Requirements

  • Have sophomore or junior status 
  • Be a Bethel student in spring 2024 and fall 2024
  • Report for fall semester work on August 21, 2024, and be available through the first day of fall semester (commitment ends when the position is filled for the following year)
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Have served on WW staff for at least one year prior (negotiable for certain committees)
  • Be willing to complete behind-the-scenes work
  • Have a strong presence in “up-front” situations
  • Have strong organization and time management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Be responsible and provide dependable follow-through on all tasks with little direction
  • Be willing to make unpopular and difficult decisions and to confront peers as needed
  • Understand and wholeheartedly embrace the Welcome Week commitment at the bottom of this page 

Coordinator position overview

WW coordinators support and serve undergraduate new student orientation by assisting in the development of Bethel’s new student community. Each coordinator reports to the associate dean for campus engagement in the Office of Student Life. This is a paid position; compensation is a $2,000 stipend. The main responsibilities of the WW coordinator are to recruit, hire, and train the WW staff, plan and organize all new student orientation activities, and work with other campus partners on the new student experience. 

Job functions

  • Hire WW staff, including seven committee heads and about 60 staff members.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings:
    • Twice a month meetings with the WW committee heads and supervisors
    • Twice a month meetings with supervisors for training and planning
  • Execute spring (January 30-January 31, 2024) and fall (August 28-September 1, 2024) orientation.
  • Attend mandatory events:
    • WW Leadership Retreat: January 28-29, 2024 (all day, overnight)
    • WW Staff Retreat: March 2-3, 2024
    • Workday: April 14, 2024
    • Student Leadership Retreat: TBD
    • WW Fall Training: August 19-27, 2024
    • Welcome Week: August 28-September 1, 2024
  • Develop and implement WW staff training.
  • Plan a monthly all-staff activity (February, March, April, May), including a staff reunion in September.
  • Conduct committee head evaluations in spring and fall.
  • Assist in hiring new WW coordinators (fall 2024).
  • Maintain a lifestyle that abides by the Bethel Covenant.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The time commitment for all of the above adds up to an average of five hours a week minimum (some weeks more!). Knowing this before you apply is important!

Requirements

  • Be a current Bethel student who has served on Welcome Week at least one year
  • Be available to begin work immediately
  • Report for fall semester work on August 19, 2024, and be available through the first day of fall semester (commitment ends when the position is filled for the following year)
  • Work at least 5 hours a week
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Be self-initiating and able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Be detail-oriented and organized
  • Have strong team, interpersonal, and collaborative skills
  • Understand and wholeheartedly embrace the Welcome Week commitment below

Welcome Week commitment

Because we take seriously the mission of transitioning students into Bethel with the love of Jesus Christ, we insist that all members of the Welcome Week team be of one mind on a few foundational elements.
