Commencement Ceremony

Benson Great Hall

Your major’s academic department determines which ceremony you attend. Check department assignments to confirm which ceremony is yours. All graduating students are expected to attend their commencement ceremony. If you have a double major, if you are graduating with a family member who is assigned to another ceremony, or if you are unable to attend your ceremony, email as soon as possible to request a change in ceremony.

An online graduation packet will be emailed to you in March. It contains important information and forms to complete, including a form to provide pronunciation of your name. Pay attention to the deadlines listed. Final instructions will be emailed in May.

Graduate Lineup

There is no rehearsal. Instead, you will receive important instructions at lineup. Report to the Robertson Center Gym 45 minutes before your ceremony starts. Wear your gown and cap with tassel (and honor cords if you received them). A valuables check (for purses, phones, etc.) will be available.

Marshals will lead the graduating students in two lines to Benson Great Hall. If you are unable to walk this route, email Anna Kaihoi at to arrange accommodations.

Guest Seating in Benson Great Hall

Your guests do not need tickets. Seating is on a first-come basis. Please limit your guest count to 6 or fewer. Overflow seating with closed-circuit viewing is available. Because the service and ceremony are formal and the acoustics are lively, encourage your guests to make other arrangements for babies and young children. Direct your guests to guest information for additional details, including accessible seating.

Commencement Reception

A reception for you and your guests will take place in Brushaber Commons following the ceremony. Hallway hosts will direct everyone to the reception. Tell your guests to meet you at the reception. Signs identifying academic departments will be posted throughout the reception area as gathering points for grads, guests, and faculty. Some departments will gather in the Underground, and some in Monson Dining Center. Refreshments will be available.

A professional photographer will take individual photos of graduates as they receive their diploma cover on stage. To view your photo, visit and use the search word “Bethel”. You may order your photo via the website or call Picture Place at 651.426.0232.
