Annual Report 2006
Over my three decades at Bethel, first as dean, then
as president, I can’t tell you my deep sense of gratification in
watching this remarkable school grow step by step from a regional
college and seminary into a nationally ranked Christian university with
5,800 students preparing for a life of influence in more than 90 fields.
Since our founding in 1871 by John Alexis Edgren, it seems Bethel’s
leaders have shared a common conviction: Progress comes not through
resisting change, but embracing it.
In fact, it is an axiom of Scripture that blessings beget more responsibility. Jesus said, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded,” (Luke 12: 47-49). And His parable about a servant chastened for merely keeping safe his share of talents is one of the most convicting in the New Testament (Matthew 25:25-27).
We call this report “Steps Ahead” because it outlines eight major challenges that confront Christian higher education—challenges we must meet in order to thrive in a rapidly changing world. They are survival mandates, according to social researcher Daniel Yankelovich, and former president of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities Robert Andringa.
But we also chose the title “Steps Ahead” because Bethel University is indeed steps ahead in our position. We are well situated to meet these eight challenges and others. With gratitude to God and partners who share in our mission and vision, we’re already ahead of the curve in turning these trends into exhilarating new opportunities.
It has never been Bethel’s pattern to react, but rather to lead in the name of Christ and for His glory. For the rest of my time here and beyond, God grant us the courage to take bold steps ahead.
