Changing careers? How a Master of Arts in Teaching can help you enter the classroom

A career in education offers the chance to shape lives, inspire future generations, and find personal fulfillment through meaningful work. For professionals looking to make a career change, Bethel University’s Master of Arts in Teaching program provides a direct, structured pathway into the classroom. “One of the greatest strengths of Bethel’s graduate-level teacher preparation programs, like the M.A. in Teaching, is how well it’s designed for career changers,” says Program Director Molly Wickam, Ph.D.

Whether you’ve always felt called to teach or are discovering a new passion later in life, this degree equips you with the practical skills, Minnesota licensure preparation, and confidence to lead in today’s educational landscape.

A professional pathway to the classroom

Bethel’s M.A. in Teaching is designed for people who hold a bachelor’s degree and are seeking an initial Minnesota teaching license. Rather than returning to school for an undergraduate degree in education, career changers can pursue this graduate-level route that integrates pedagogy, practice, and licensure preparation into one comprehensive program. Wickam says most people in the program bring professional experiences from other industries and life experiences to the classroom—including the professors. “I was a career changer too,” Wickam says. “I moved from a corporate career into a teacher preparation program and earned my business and social studies teaching licenses, and I taught both business and social studies classes at two different high schools. I resonate with our students who are changing careers.”

Coursework is completed online with occasional on-campus Saturday sessions in the Twin Cities. Most students complete 36-37 credits in 17-23 months, plus a thesis.

  • Structured for career changers: Coursework is designed to support adult learners balancing professional responsibilities, family, and other commitments.
  • Accelerated licensure: Students can pursue licensure while earning their master’s degree, helping them transition into teaching more quickly.
  • Christian perspective: While Bethel welcomes students from all backgrounds, courses are taught from a foundation of the Christian faith, which adds meaning. Faculty model how values and beliefs shape teaching, offering mentorship that supports both professional and personal growth.

Equipping you for real-world classrooms

The Master of Arts in Teaching program offers more than theoretical instruction. It provides the tools and hands-on experiences needed to thrive in today’s classrooms. Students gain a strong understanding of child and adolescent development, learning theories, and curriculum design, along with practical strategies for classroom management, teaching, and assessment. Wickam says Bethel’s coursework is rigorous, designed to prepare you for real classrooms. “All of the faculty are either currently teaching in K-12 schools or used to teach in K-12 schools,” she says. “We emphasize what today’s schools require, which is building strong relationships with students, integrating technology tools into teaching and assessment, and designing instruction that is engaging and relevant.”

  • Pedagogical foundations: Learn how students learn, how to differentiate instruction, and how to use data to guide decisions.
  • Classroom management: Build confidence in creating safe and engaging learning environments for students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Student teaching experience: With Bethel supervision, you’ll apply your knowledge during supervised field experiences and student teaching placements, gaining valuable feedback and mentorship from experienced educators.

This preparation ensures that those who complete the program are prepared to apply for their teaching license and classroom-ready. Bethel recommends candidates for Minnesota licensure, which the Minnesota Department of Education awards after all requirements are met, including successful completion of the Candidate Preservice Assessment of Student Teaching (CPAST). If you plan to teach outside Minnesota, be sure to check your state’s licensure requirements.

Meeting a critical need in education

Schools across the country face a growing demand for qualified teachers, especially in high-need fields such as STEM, business, communication arts and literature, and ESL. Through the program’s curriculum, you’ll also learn how to effectively teach diverse learners—including English learners, students with special needs, and gifted and talented students. As professionals from other occupations transition into teaching, they bring valuable perspectives, life experience, and problem-solving skills to the classroom. The M.A. in Teaching program recognizes this and is designed to help career changers answer the call to serve in high-need communities. “If you feel drawn to teaching, don’t wait, because your knowledge and experiences are needed now more than ever,” Wickam says.

  • High job placement rates: Bethel graduates are in demand and supported through a strong network of school partnerships and career resources.
  • Flexibility in specializations: Choose the subject area that best aligns with your goals and background.

A degree that aligns with purpose

Beyond credentials and job prospects, a career in education is about impact. For many, teaching becomes more than just a job, it becomes a calling. At Bethel, students are encouraged to grow not only as educators but also as leaders who bring compassion, resilience, and purpose into their work.

  • Values-driven learning: Courses highlight empathy, kindness, gratitude, and the transformative role of education in society.
  • Supportive community: Learn alongside peers and faculty who are dedicated to helping you succeed.
