Event Description

Lisa Sharon Harper will present a 50-minute lecture on the relationship between reconciliation and social justice issues. She will examine how biblical and historical narratives can inform our responses to various inequities in our society. Young adults from the wider community and Bethel students will share the platform with Harper. Through this engagement these young adult conversation partners will share how their experiences of confronting injustices shape their faith outlook.

Lisa Sharon Harper serves as Sojourners Chief Church Engagement Officer. A prolific speaker, writer and activist, Harper is the author of several books, including the critically acclaimed book: The Very Good Gospel: How Everything Wrong can be Made Right, an exploration of God’s intent for the wholeness of all relationships.  Harper fasted for 22 days as a core faster with the 2013 immigration reform Fast for Families and trained and catalyzed evangelicals in St. Louis and Baltimore to engage the 2014 push for justice in Ferguson and the 2015 healing process in Baltimore. A columnist at Sojourners Magazine and an Auburn Theological Seminary Senior Fellow, Harper is regularly featured on Sojourners Blog, in The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, and Relevant Magazine. In 2015, The Huffington Post recognized her as one of “50 Powerful Women Religious Leaders to Celebrate on International Women’s Day.” Most recently, Relevant Magazine recognized The Very Good Gospel as one of “Six Books that Will Change the Way You See the World” and Harper as one of “Seven Leaders to Follow in 2017.” She is in the ordination process with the Evangelical Covenant Church.

This is an internal event for the Bethel Community.

Lisa Sharon Harper’s book, The Very Good Gospel: How Everything Wrong Can Be Made Right, can be found in the Bethel campus store.
