Event Description
Given the high regard Americans have for the Constitution, it is easy to forget that when it was first proposed every aspect of it was hotly debated and nearly failed to be ratified. A central theme in the debate between the Federlists and Anti-Federalists was the meaning of liberty and the proper institutions to secure liberty.
This presentation examines the debate over liberty through the lens of the French philosopher Montesquieu, his influence on the Founding generation and how the two sides appropriated his ideas to develop dramatically different conceptions of liberty.
