Event Description
In an interactive format, learn about confronting the complex issue of pain medication management and addiction. We are offering a reduced rate for Bethel community members who do not require continuing education credits and for Bethel Clinical Adjunct Faculty. Breakfast and lunch are provided. Conference is pending approval for 6.0 AAFP prescribed credit hours (equivalent to 6 AMA category I credits, or 6 AAPA category I credits).

8:15-9:10 a.m. | Tolerance & Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia - Dale Berry, MD
Biological and psychological causes of narcotic tolerance, including discussion of the addiction centers of the brain, neurotransmitters involved with addiction, and the consequences of opioid-induced hyperalgesia.
9:15-10:10 a.m. | Addiction in Healthcare Professionals - Blair Nelson, MD
Incidence of addiction in healthcare professionals, how to identify an impaired colleague, and various approaches to support an impaired colleague, including reintegration into the work environment after treatment.
10:15-11:10 a.m. | Mental Illness and Chemical Dependency Dual Diagnosis - Polly Hendel, PA-C
Identification of these underdiagnosed comorbidities including novel approaches to their treatment as well as identification of the underserved populations commonly impacted.
11:15 a.m.-12:10 p.m. | The Use of Suboxone in Addiction Therapy - Dale Berry, MD
History and pitfalls of medication assisted treatment (MAT) for Substance Abuse Disorder (SAD), with discussion of the development, mechanisms of action, and relative merits of Suboxone
12:10-1:05 p.m. | Lunch and A Client's Story
1:05-2 p.m. | A Practical Approach to Pain Management Without the Use of Opioids - Matt Beeson, MD
Stepwise approach to patients with Chronic Pain Syndromes, including escalation of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, documentation tools, and standards of treatment.
2:05-3 p.m. | Faith-Based Treatment Programs - Mark Berggren, Teen Challenge
Discussion of the history of faith-based addiction treatment programs, how faith is integrated, and how its recidivism rates compare with non-faith-based approaches.
Speakers
Dale Berry, MD
Dale practiced for 25 years as a family medicine physician, running an addiction treatment center within Allina Health, including Suboxone management for over 600 patients. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School and recently retired from practice.
Blair Nelson, MD
Blair graduated from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities Medical School and practiced in emergency medicine for 20 years. He currently serves as the program director for the Medical Sciences M.S. degree at Bethel, mentoring students as they prepare for a career in medicine.
Polly Hendel, PA-C
Polly works in outpatient mental health with Nystrom & Associates, specializing in adults with schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, anxiety, OCD and addiction. A large portion of her practice includes management of suboxone for patients struggling with addiction.
Matt Beeson, MD
Matt is a family medicine physician with Hudson Physicians in Hudson, WI. He graduated from St. George’s University School of Medicine and has special expertise in managing both chronic pain and addiction.
Mark Berggren
Mark graduated from Bethel University in 2009 with a BA in Organizational Communication, Business, Communication, Leadership, Marketing, Graphic Design. He currently serves as the Director of Strategic Partnerships for MN Adult and Teen Challenge in Minneapolis, MN.
