Students enjoy time together. Bethel plans to host summer camps this year, but with COVID-19 precautions.

With the end of the academic year coming, it is almost time to make plans for summer. This year, Bethel has a wide variety of summer camps, including a new program called Royal Academy. Interested in what Bethel has to offer this summer? Here’s what is available.

Royal Academy

Royal Academy is a suite of academic camps. Barrett Fisher, dean of academic programs says, “The Royal Academy initiative builds on Bethel’s successful summer camp programs by creating a unique opportunity for academic departments to offer engaging educational experiences that introduce middle and high school students, especially those who may have not imagined themselves attending college, to Bethel faculty, academic disciplines, and community life.” This year, three different academic camps are being offered.

Astronomy Camp
Grades 7-9
This camp is for students who are interested in space exploration. This will be a hands-on camp with Bethel Physics and Engineering faculty. Possible topics include: telescope basics and set-up, basic observational astronomy, colonization of planets/moons, basic “rover robotics,” basic rocketry, how stars change over time, solar observation, and spectroscopy.

Biochemistry Camp
Women in Grades 11-12
This event is for young women who have finished 11th or 12th grade. The goal of this camp is to encourage young women to be confident in their laboratory experience and motivate them to pursue a career in the sciences. In our brand new, state-of-the-art science facility, students will perform hands-on experiments such as: fluorescence microscopy, ELISA, cytometry, and GC/MS.

Scrubs Camp
Grades 9-12
Scrubs Camp is a healthcare immersion program where students explore various aspects of healthcare and the careers that exist within. During the two- day camp, students get to interact directly with many working professionals in a variety of healthcare professions and get a tour and experience of what it might be like to work in a particular area of healthcare. Students will receive their own scrubs, cloth mask, and hand sanitizer.

COVID-19 precautions will be followed, including 6-foot social distancing measures, mandatory masks, encouraging hand washing and hand sanitizing, as well as keeping students in small groups, no larger than 12 students per group.

Bethel Business Academy

Bethel Business Academy connects high school students who are interested in a business career with expert faculty and business professionals in a university setting. Students will explore a variety of business careers and learn about their strengths and interests. This year, the camp will be two full days of business programming with no overnight stay.

At the end of the program, there will be an awards ceremony for academy attendees and their parents.

Living the Questions Youth Theology Institute

Living the Questions is for students going into 10th, 11th and 12th grade who want to think deeply about topics related to justice, science, and the media-all through a theological lens. It begins with a week of living and learning on Bethel’s campus. Unlike other programs, this program continues beyond the summer into a 10-month program, which includes regular meetings with a mentor, two on-campus retreats, and community engagement projects.

This year, the theme is science and faith. Students will learn from faculty and have opportunities to put their faith into action.
