Bethel University’s 68th Festival of Christmas kicked off the holiday season with reflections of joy, transformation, and unity for the Bethel community. This year’s theme, Children, Go Where I Send Thee, invited attendees to consider their calling and purpose, drawing from the biblical passage in Matthew 28:19, where Jesus sends His followers into the world to make disciples.

Bethel President Ross Allen introduced the event with a heartfelt message that echoed this year’s theme. “We are all called to be transformed in Christ, and as an institution, we aim to equip students to fulfill their calling—to go out into the world as servants of God,” he shared, setting the stage for a performance that reflected Bethel’s mission of preparing students not only with academic knowledge but also with faith and purpose.

Merrin Guice Gill, associate professor of music and director of choral activities, along with Kevin Shull, adjunct instructor of music and manager of music organizations, led the festival’s planning and brought a fresh approach to this year’s program. Several new elements were incorporated, reflecting the festival’s ability to evolve while honoring tradition. A rap-style musical piece added a contemporary touch, and high-energy movement from the choir brought excitement and energy to the stage.

The evening began with the choir positioned in the balcony and rafters, each holding a candle, as they moved toward the stage. The lighting around the stage, with bright holiday-themed designs, created a warm, festive atmosphere and set the tone for the night. Audience participation was another special element of the evening, with attendees joining in on beloved carols and songs throughout the program. Children also helped narrate the scripture readings, bringing the Christmas story to life in a personal, relatable way.

The event’s focus was clear: to inspire all in attendance to embrace their calling, just as the theme invites—Children, go where I send thee. This emphasis on purpose and transformation resonated deeply with Bethel’s values, highlighting how the university equips students with both the knowledge and the spiritual foundation to answer their callings and serve others with faith and dedication.

As always, Bethel’s music and performing arts department’s dedication was evident throughout the event. The student performers—whether in the choir, orchestra, or handbell ensembles—demonstrated incredible skill and passion. Their hard work and the spirit of worship they brought to the stage made this year’s festival a memorable experience for all who attended.
