Bethel University’s 69th Festival of Christmas opened with a warm welcome and a heartfelt prayer from President Ross Allen. As attendees settled into their seats in Benson Great Hall, Allen invited them to reflect on the meaning of the Advent season: “May this time together renew our sense of awe and wonder at the story of Christmas. May it bring comfort to those who need it most. May it be a reminder to each of us of how much You love us.”

One of Bethel’s most anticipated events, Festival of Christmas offers a space for musical worship and shared reflection focused on the hope and joy of Christ’s coming. This year’s theme, “A Savior, Who is Christ the Lord,” set the tone for the evening’s message.

Allen reflected on the legacy of Festival—now in its 69th year—and the community it draws together each December. “Everything we do at Bethel points us back to our Savior, Jesus Christ,” he said. “The teaching and learning that happens in our classrooms are acts of worship as our students learn more about God’s world, His Word, and our responsibility to build His Kingdom here on earth.” He expressed gratitude to the students, faculty, and staff who brought the event to life, calling their work “a labor of love” and a reflection of Bethel’s Christ-centered mission.

“As a community, we remain steadfast in our commitment to keep Jesus at the center of all we do,” Allen said. “For His glory, and for our neighbor’s good,” he added.

As the lights dimmed over the audience, the first notes of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” rose in a candlelight processional, with Festival musicians surrounding the audience in song. Each singer held a candle, casting a glow across the hall, creating a moment of stillness and anticipation. It was a beginning rooted in reverence.

Throughout the evening, the musical talents of Bethel students were on full display. From the handbell ensemble to the choirs, students used their gifts to glorify God and lead others in worship. The program featured performances by the Bethel Choir, Lucia Chorum, Wind Symphony, Handbell Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, and Festival Orchestra—under the direction of Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities Merrin Guice Gill and Director of Music and Performing Arts and Music Organizations Kevin Shull.

Between musical selections, student narrators read Scripture and reflections that guided the audience through the story of Christ’s birth. Carefully designed lighting and visual transitions added depth to each performance, illuminating both the stage and the message.

Audience participation remained a signature element. Attendees joined in singing “O Holy Night” and “Joy to the World,” filling Benson Great Hall with powerful, collective worship.

Each year, Festival of Christmas blends faith and artistry in ways that reflect Bethel’s mission: to glorify God through transformational experiences. For many families, Festival is a treasured tradition. For others, it’s a first encounter with the heart of Bethel: a vibrant, Christ-centered community where students are empowered to become who they are called to be.
