Choose your own date night

Lexi Beasley explores date night options for loan-laden college students.

Valentine’s Day, amidst all the chocolates and teddy bears, can bring its fair share of stress and pressure. Luckily for you, we’ve compiled a few inexpensive date ideas of our own, sure to suit any couple! Whether you're a romantic or a penny-pincher, one of these is sure to be a success or at least spark a unique idea of your own. Good luck, Valentines!

• Rice Park/Cossetta’s, St. Paul - 20 minutes from Bethel

Head over to Rice Park in St. Paul for a night of ice skating and pizza. Pay $2 for skate rental and free admission at the Wells Fargo Winter Skate in the middle of Rice Park. After you’ve worn yourselves out, make your way over to Cossetta’s Italian Market & Pizzeria for the unrivaled New York style pizza — only $3.50 a slice — and you’ll most likely need just one! There are also pasta and salad options. If you still have room, make sure to splurge on cannoli — it’s the best around!

• Starry Night

Before Valentine’s Day, take a look at and pay $14 to name a star after your significant other. On the day itself, bundle up and wander out to frozen Lake Valentine (Hey, even the name fits!). For a truly “walk to remember-esque” romance, whip out your stargazing map and let your sweetheart find the one you named.

• Feed My Starving Children, Coon Rapids - less than 20 minutes from Bethel

Volunteer to pack meals for kids around the world. Whether this is your first date or your 50th, serving others is always refreshing and a good reminder of how blessed we are. Plus, those hair nets are sure to spark some laughs. After you’ve fed the hungry, treat yourself to a dessert down the road at Olive Garden (Black Tie Mousse Cake, White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake, Tiramisu — you really can’t go wrong!).

• A Night In

Plan a Valentine’s night in by making your own dinner. Pick out a recipe together ahead of time and go grocery shopping for the ingredients. Cooking together can be quite an adventure and make both of you feel very accomplished if it turns out. If you mistakenly add salt instead of sugar, however, laugh about it and order in Davanni’s with flex. Finish with a Redbox for free with code: DVDONME or BREAKROOM. Just don’t forget to bring it back the next day!

• Carmike Wynnsong, Mounds View - 10 minutes from Bethel

You can never go wrong with the classic dinner and a movie. But with many theaters charging $10 per person, this seemingly straightforward date can put quite the dent in your pocket. Carmike Wynnsong, only 10 minutes from Bethel, offers new movies for $5.25, nearly half the price of AMC.
