This letter to the editor is a response to the article "LGBT at Bethel" which can be read online at http://www.bethel.edu/news/clarion/articles/2013/February/lgbt-bethel.
I read with interest the Clarion's article "LGBT at Bethel" since years ago I was a Bethel student struggling with same-sex attraction. To this day I am grateful for my Bethel professors who encouraged me to follow the Word — not the world — on such issues. My struggle with same-sex attraction has not been an easy one (you can find my story at pastorsstudy.org), but I thank God for those at Bethel who encouraged me to "take up the cross, deny myself, and follow Christ." Sadly, in our relativistic age, a number of mainline denominations have decided to follow the culture and not Christ on this issue. My prayer for Bethel is that it will ever hold true to the Word of God, even in the midst of the world's opposition. The truly loving thing to do for a person like me is to encourage me to "fight the good fight of faith" and to abstain from behavior which grieves God and which will ultimately exclude people from God's Kingdom (I Corinthians 6:9-11).
As our culture drifts further and further from God, may Bethel be willing to swim against the stream and hold forth the beauty and truth of God's Word.
