Hagen grew up in Indianola, Iowa, and began playing the viola at age 9. She earned a B.A. degree in English from St. Olaf College and a M.M. degree in Viola Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music where she studied with Jeff Irvine and Lynne Ramsey. Other teachers and mentors have included Richard Marshall (Minnesota Orchestra), Alice Preves (St. Paul Chamber Orchestra), Charles Gray, Peter Salaff, and the Cavani Quartet. She is a violist with the Minnesota Opera Orchestra and frequently substitutes for the Minnesota Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. She is on the faculty of the Upper Midwest String Camp where she coaches chamber music, leads viola sectionals, teaches group techniques classes, and leads pedagogy classes for interns. She has also performed with the New World Symphony, participated in the International Festival-Institute at Round Top, and toured with Barry Manilow. She is currently teaching and freelancing in the Twin Cities area.
