Job title

Highlight

I've been a nurse for 31 years, working the most of my service in obstetrics. For most of the last 9 years, I've balanced teaching and bedside care. I like both. My husband of 30 years and I have 7 children and are very much enjoying our granddaughter. It's a pleasure to join a faith-based academic setting. I'm looking forward to guiding students in holistic care of growing families at Maple Grove Hospital.

Biography

I grew up as the oldest of 8 children on a farm in the Red River Valley. I've picked rock and hoed beets! My sister had special needs assisted by in-home nurses and I was an active part of her care of high-tech skills at ages 13-16. Nurses in our home and at the hospital impacted me. Naturally as the oldest, I was a nurturer and made to be responsible early on. I also had a unique role as a candystiper/aide on a medical floor in junior high.

After high school graduation in1987, I attended a small Catholic college and jam-packed my ADN into 2 years. I worked as a graduate nurse prior to taking my boards and thankfully passed the good-old fashion 2-day written boards in 1989. Shortly after beginning my work as a surgical nurse, I met my husband-to-be and a year later, married. Over 17 years, we welcomed 7 children, never quite feeling complete (it felt like someone was missing) until our third daughter arrived after a string of 4 boys.

I've worked surgical (post-operative care) for 5 years, post-anesthesia care unit for 2 years, then obstetrics since. During this time, I floated to pediatrics for 5 years, worked at the VA on the short stay/rehabilitation/ventilator unit for 2 years, floated to the medical floor at Cambridge Medical Center for 5 years, or worked hospice at Quiet Oaks Hospice House and Respite Care for 6 years in either casual or part-time status. While still staying current with bedside care, I taught at Saint Cloud Technical and Community College, Saint Cloud State University, Anoka Ramsey Community College in Cambridge, or Rasmussen College as adjunct, part- or full-time faculty.  (It sounds crazy, but spread over 31 years, it really wasn't).

Courses taught

I've taught pathophysiology and nursing theory for chronic care as well as skills labs. I've taught clinicals on medical/surgical (including bone/joint and neuro), VA rehab, and obstetrics. Most recently, I've taught online lecture classes for maternal child (obstetrics and pediatrics) as well as online or campus clinicals for med-surg and maternal child. Additionally, I've had online labs for health assessment and nursing skills.

Presentations

I am an Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Instructor for AWHONN and teach 2-day courses for CEUs.

Hobbies and interests

I like spending time with family, enjoying my granddaughter, baking, and cleaning/organizing. After 35+ years, I decided to try waterskiing again on sunny September 23 (brrr!) but was only successful for a few seconds. I'm interested in getting back in shape to go for it again!
