The second movement of Bach's Suite, known as "Air on the G String," features one of his most recognizable melodies, while Beethoven builds on his own admiration of Bach with a fugue-like structure in the Heiliger Dankgesang. The second half of the program starts with three works originally written for piano and arranged for wind nonet by the SPCO's principal horn James Ferree. Closing the program is Mendelssohn's Octet in E-flat, which makes extended use of Bach-like counterpoint along with a symphonic sensibility reminiscent of Beethoven.
