Considered playwright Pierre Corneille's greatest play, Le Cid is based on the legend of El Cid, a military figure from Spain. The hero, Don Rodrigue, and heroine, Chimene, have been compared to Romeo and Juliet. Their families are at odds, and the lovers must decide between honor and love. In a society that demands that a person without honor is unworthy of love, the two young people face the greatest dilemma of their lives.
