Bethel celebrates exemplary employees at inaugural Royal Recognition Awards Night

Pause…notice…and recognize incredible members of the Bethel community—this was the heart behind Bethel’s inaugural Royal Recognition Awards Night, says Christine Osgood, Bethel’s director of culture and wellbeing. Hosted by the Office of People and Culture in Benson Great Hall on April 22, 2025, the event featured the presentation of three Core Value Mark of Distinction Awards and the Oriendain Gardner Inclusive Excellence Award, along with “Legacy Talks” from departing employees who will leave an enduring mark on the Bethel community.
“When we stop and truly look around at our colleagues, we come to find we work with stunning people—people who live out Bethel’s core values and priorities. It is a blessing to work in such a setting, surrounded by caring individuals who give their time, talents, and energy to the mission of Bethel,” says Osgood. “I am hopeful that this event becomes a yearly tradition where we glean wisdom from those who are retiring and celebrate those who have been consistently embodying Bethel’s values.”
Core Value Mark of Distinction honorees
Elizabeth Ewest ’07, health services nurse practitionerCore value: Christ-follower
Ewest is recognized for her unwavering commitment to compassionate care. Known for her gentle spirit and deep empathy, she provides a safe and welcoming environment for students, particularly those in the BUILD program. Her approach is often described as a “sermon without words,” reflecting her Christ-like demeanor in every interaction.
“Elizabeth is more than just a medical provider; she is a vital thread in the fabric of our Bethel community, a living testament to our core values in action,” says Miranda Powers, vice president of student experience. “Her quiet dedication and profound compassion make a tangible difference in the lives of our students every single day.”
Ann Holland GS’99, nursing professor
Core value: Learner
Holland is recognized for her relentless pursuit of knowledge and excellence in teaching, with her research focusing on clinical judgment, patient-centered care, and culturally competent nursing practices. Knowing that staying current in the field is paramount to effective teaching, she returns to the ICU for internships to ensure that her teaching remains grounded in current clinical realities and enriches the learning experiences of her students.
“The impact of this individual’s dedication to learning is profound. It has shaped the educational experiences of countless alumni, influenced the professional growth of colleagues, and ultimately contributed to the enhanced care provided to patients,” says Robin Rylaarsdam, university provost. “Her consistent presence in clinical settings serves as a powerful model of lifelong learning in action.”
Nick Cedergren ’12, GS’26, associate dean of residence life
Core value: Character builder
Cedergren is honored for his transformative leadership—cultivating a culture of intentional mentorship, fostering growth and cohesion within his team. Cedergren's commitment to developing others is evident in his personalized approach, ensuring each team member feels valued and empowered to support students effectively.
“By investing so deeply in his team, Nick plays a crucial role in shaping the very experience of our students in the residence halls,” says Powers. “His support ensures that resident directors and resident assistants are well-trained, well-supported, and equipped to help students thrive here at Bethel. He fosters cohesion and clear communication, ensuring a positive and uplifting environment in every hall.”
Oriendain Gardner Inclusive Excellence Honoree
Nicolas Ziemet, director of practicum education and assistant director of social workZiemet is recognized for his significant contributions to fostering inclusivity and belonging within the Bethel community. His efforts have created a more welcoming environment for all students, reflecting Bethel's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
“Nick was nominated for this award because of his innovative teaching, mentorship, and advocacy for marginalized communities,” says Rahn Franklin, vice president of inclusive excellence. “He is a champion of social justice—working to build a beloved community that mirrors the house of God in its climate, composition, and character.”

Legacy Talks
Four departing Bethel employees share words of wisdom in their "Legacy Talks."
Marion Larson, English professorAt Bethel for more than 30 years, Larson has cultivated a space for students that resembles an embrace—opening the arms, waiting, closing the arms, and opening them again.
Scott Strand S’01, GS’06, instructional media designerStrand has been part of the Bethel community for 27 years and believes in the necessity of change—and through it, finding peace and rest with God.
Ann Holland GS’99, nursing professorHolland has taught at Bethel for 19 years and has always stressed the importance of teamwork in the nursing environment, citing Proverbs 4:9-12: “Two are better than one.”
Brian Holland, associate business professorHolland has taught at Bethel for 40 years and says it has been both his work and his ministry.

Bethel employees took time to recognize and honor each other at the event hosted by the Office of People and Culture.

President Ross Allen addressed faculty and staff, recognizing their dedication and commitment to Bethel's mission.
Throughout the evening, Bethel community members had a chance to celebrate the dedication of exceptional coworkers and to be reminded of the fulfillment that can come with helping equip and educate students to lead lives of impact.
“This event is so important because it gives us a chance to pause and honor the people who bring Bethel’s mission to life each day,” says President Ross Allen. “With dedicated faculty and staff investing in our students and one another, Bethel continues to be a Christ-centered community of learning, transformation, and service."
