Internships

Why do an Internship?

Internships are one of the best ways to connect academic learning with professional work. You get workplace exposure, make valuable contacts, gain skills, and become more competitive in landing desirable jobs.

Talk with your advisor about your department's internship requirements. Most departments offer academic credit for internships. If an internship course is not offered for the semester, you need to sign up for an individual internship by filling out a form from the registrar's office.

Getting Started

  1. Set a goal for your internship

    Ask yourself:
    • What type of work and setting do I want to pursue once I graduate?
    • How much experience is necessary to secure an entry-level position in my desired field?
  2. Talk to your advisor

    • Is an internship required for graduation?
    • Are there any requirements for a qualifying internship?
    • Does the department place students in internships?
    • Is there a list of recommended or past internship websites?
  3. Look into your connections

    • Advisors or department faculty
    • Career Development & Calling
    • Upperclassmen and other students with internship experience
    • Past employers or employers of interest
    • Employers at job fairs
    • Family, friends, and other connections at work
  4. Determine which internships to apply for

When looking for internships, consider the following.
    A good internship will:
    • Have clear expectations and objectives.
    • Provide opportunities for hands-on experience.
    • Offer mentoring and support.
    • Assess progress with regular feedback and evaluation.
    • Present networking opportunities.
    • Allow for professional development.
  5. Prepare your application materials

    • Resume
    • Cover Letter
    • References (be sure to ask them permission before including them on your list)
    • Consider creating a LinkedIn profile
