Interviewing

An interview is a strategic conversation with a hiring manager that focuses on the interviewee's fit in the organization. The employer's goal is to hire a candidate with the needed knowledge and skills. They also want the personal qualities needed to succeed in the job and the company's culture.

Tips for Interviewing

Before the Interview

  • Research the company and the position
  • Pick out your outfit and plan the commute
  • If virtual: prepare your space and equipment
  • Practice typical interview questions and prepare stories
  • Prepare a list of questions

Day of the Interview

  • Arrive Early
  • Bring a resume and a notepad
  • Relax (you have come prepared!)

During the Interview

  • Smile, express interest and enthusiasm
  • Answer questions honestly
  • Demonstrate why you are a great candidate
  • Take notes

After the Interview

  • Follow-up with a thank you letter

How to Answer Difficult Questions

"Tell me about yourself."

Describe your professional, not personal, life.

"Describe a weakness."

State an actual weakness, but not one that will disqualify you from the job. Describe how you manage that weakness.

"Why do you want to leave your current position?"

Don’t say anything negative about your previous employer and don’t focus on salary.

"Why should I hire you?"

Only some interviewers ask this question directly. But, it's the question that you answer with all your responses. Make sure you provide a concise answer to this question that directly explains why you are qualified and the best fit.

'Think on your feet' questions

Keep a sense of humor, you don’t have to give the correct answer. Instead, demonstrate your thinking process and ability to be flexible.
