Nursing Research Benefits Local Immigrant Community

Bethel nursing student Mariya Kovaleva has been doing original research into the social supports of new mothers in the Somali immigrant community. A senior at Bethel, Kovaleva has been working on this research as part of the Edgren Scholars Program, which funds up to four research partnerships in which College of Arts & Sciences students and faculty work on summer scholarship projects.

The results of Kovaleva’s research are changing the way nurses relate to these new Somali mothers. The findings provided recommendations as well as ways for nurses to be more proactive.
