Heart & Mind
Volume 22 No 2 | Spring 2009
Several hundred guests celebrated the inauguration of Jay Barnes as the fifth president of Bethel University during an Installation Service held March 27.
The event was attended by university presidents and representatives from across the country; Bethel President Emeritus George Brushaber; First Lady of Minnesota and Bethel alumna Mary Pawlenty; President of the National Association of Evangelicals Leith Anderson; and many Bethel students, staff, faculty, and friends.
Numerous colleagues and friends spoke, recognizing Barnes for his humility, leadership, commitment to God, passion for reconciliation, and heart for students. In sometimes humorous and often deeply touching charges to the new president, they reminded him that “God will lead, direct, and guide in all times,” and that the “university presidency is a marathon, not a sprint.”
Barnes addressed the crowd on the topic “Becoming Adventurous Christ-Followers,” challenging the Bethel community to give students a vision of Christ worth committing to. He emphasized the importance of helping students integrate their faith into their lives, studies, and future careers by acting with integrity, loving their enemies, serving those in need, and engaging the unbelieving world.
