Applied Performance Major

Students with strong performance skills are prepared for graduate studies in music. They become professional musicians, college and university teachers, or private studio teachers. You may choose one or more emphases:

Composition

Why should I study composition?

Choosing an emphasis in composition means you will refine your music songwriting skills to produce beautiful works of sound. Explore compositions for single instruments, chamber groups, choirs, and orchestral works.

What can I do with this degree?

Our alumni have gone on to become professional composers, instructors, directors, and create their own signature musical groups for which they compose.

What skills will I develop?

  • Advanced musical theory
  • Rich knowledge of music history and literature
  • Conducting
  • Pedagogy in several instrumental types
  • Collaboration with other musicians, production, and interpersonally
  • Creative problem-solving

What unique experiences or opportunities will I have?

As a composition student, you'll find opportunities to have your music be performed by yourself or other musicians on our premier stage in the Benson Great Hall. 


Instrumental

Why should I study instrumental?

As an instrumental student, you'll choose one instrument of focus, but you'll also receive instruction in multiple groups of instruments to be a well-rounded performing musician. 

What can I do with this degree?

Our alumni are performers and instructors in a variety of capacities, with professional music groups, at colleges and universities, and as in-house musicians and musical directors for churches and other organizations.

What skills will I develop?

  • Collaboration in performance, teaching, and interpersonally

What unique experiences or opportunities will I have?

You'll perform with one of our highly-regarded musical groups, which travel around the Twin Cities, the country, and even around the world. Several home events like Festival of Christmas, Classics in the Great Hall, and Jazz in the Great Hall also mean you'll perform regularly in our Benson Great Hall, a premier venue in the Twin Cities metro. 

Piano Performance

Why should I study piano performance?

If you have a deep love for tickling the ivories and want to make it part of your career, piano performance is for you. You'll become a respected musician, with deep knowledge of keyboard literature, performance, and education. You'll learn from accomplished pianists here on campus, as well as from around the Twin Cities and nation.

What can I do with this degree?

Our alumni have gone on to become professional pianists as solo artists or part of musical groups. Many have also established their own successful piano studio businesses in addition to performance work.

What skills will I develop?

  • Teaching others to play piano
  • Collaboration with others in piano performance, writing, and interpersonally
  • Creative problem-solving

What unique experiences or opportunities will I have?

With our large selection of on-campus music groups, you'll find plenty of opportunities to accompany and perform on the Benson Great Hall stage, around the country, and even around the world. 

Our annual performance prize competition and regular recitals also provide you the spotlight to perform your gift for others.
