"We had another great year in the garden," said David Walden, student employee supervisor for Sodexo at Bethel. Much of the produce from the Royal Garden was served to students and staff in the Monson Dining Center.

Often in the early hours before class at Bethel University, students will take a few minutes to themselves in the Brushaber Commons, coffee in hand. What they don’t know however is that they are a character who has just been woven in to a larger story surrounding the coffee that is so gently easing them into wakefulness.
For the last several years, Bethel has partnered with a company named City Kid Java (CKJ) to provide whole bean coffee for their students and staff. CKJ is not just about making good joe, they are about making an impact on urban youth and ensuring that they are leaving a clean world for those that follow. CKJ work alongside nonprofit partner Urban Ventures to “support kids and families in breaking the cycle of generational poverty.” Additionally, the beans that CKJ sells are Rainforest Alliance Certified meaning they take into account environmental sustainability, economic and social justice concerns.
