Meet the Staff

Lilly Endowment

The Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by three members of the Lilly family through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company.

The Lilly Endowment exists to support causes of religion, education and community development. The Endowment affords special emphasis to projects that benefit young people and promote leadership education and financial self-sufficiency in the nonprofit, charitable sector.

Living The Questions is a Youth Theology Institute funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment.


Student Counselors

Current Bethel students who have been recruited and trained to serve as guides during the summer experience.

Institute Faculty

Institute Faculty are Bethel professors and staff, as well as, community leaders who have been recruited to teach and lead a variety of workshops on the theme of science.

Katie Friesen Smith

Katie Friesen Smith, D.Min., is the director of Living The Questions Youth Theology Institute. Katie has been involved with spiritual formation and youth ministry for the majority of her career. She is thrilled to partner with Bethel University and the local church in putting on this experience for high school students. 

Carmen Gunderson

Carmen Gunderson is the assistant for Living The Questions. She has a background in camping ministry and missions. She is excited to see the program take shape and is looking forward to welcoming students this summer.
