Why should I study composition?

What can I do with this degree?

Our alumni have gone on to become professional composers, instructors, directors, and create their own signature musical groups for which they compose.

What skills will I develop?

  • Advanced musical theory
  • Rich knowledge of music history and literature
  • Conducting
  • Pedagogy in several instrumental types
  • Collaboration with other musicians, production, and interpersonally
  • Creative problem-solving

What unique experiences or opportunities will I have?

As a composition student, you'll find opportunities to have your music be performed by yourself or other musicians on our premier stage in the Benson Great Hall.

Alumni perform in local musical theatre productions at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, the Ordway, the Guthrie, and the Minnesota Children’s Theatre Company.
