What is Financial Aid?

Financial Aid is any grant or scholarship, loan, student employment offered to help a student meet college expenses. 

Has my FAFSA been received?

After December 1, check MyBethel>Checklist for FAFSA to be listed as Completed (allow 3-5 business days once you submit the item to be entered into this system).

How long does it take for my FAFSA to come to Bethel?

Usually Bethel will receive the FAFSA in 3-5 business days after student submits.

What do I need to do to be awarded Financial Aid?

Submit your FAFSA by completing it here. Some students will have to complete the Minnesota Residency Questionnaire. For a complete list go to MyBethel>Checklist.

When will I get awarded financial aid?

Within two weeks of receiving all of the Financial Aid Checklist Requirements, a Financial Aid Award will be sent out.

I submitted my FAFSA, what's next? or I just completed my FAFSA--when will my award be finalized?

Financial Aid Awards will be sent out for new CAS students after December 11. For all other students, awards will be sent out starting in March. After the student receives the Financial Aid Award, go to MyBethel>Checklist for a list of other items to turn in.

When will my aid be disbursed?

  • CAS/Seminary: Financial Aid will disburse on or around the third week of August for fall. If you are taking an interim class, aid will post on or around the first week of January for spring. If you are not taking an interim class, aid will post in early February. The first week of June is when summer semester aid will post
  • CAPS/GS: Financial Aid will disburse on the first day of the first class taken in either the fall/spring/summer. Thus there are usually three disbursement (one each semester).

What types of scholarships or Financial Aid can I apply for?

Go to Financial Aid. Choose your school, then click on Apply for Aid, followed by Types of Aid.

Where can I apply for additional scholarships?

Outside scholarships and search egines can be found on Bethel's website>financial aid>types of aid>scholarships>private scholarships. CAS students apply for departmental scholarships prior to February 10 at your MyBethel. Outside scholarship can also be found in the Financial Aid Office Outside Scholarships Book.

How long do I have to wait to be awarded after I've turned everything in?

Allow two weeks.

What is the status of my Financial Aid?

What do I need to do to accept my Financial Aid?

Why are my Bethel scholarships not disbursed? I do not want "financial aid". 

Financial Aid is any grant or scholarship, loan, student employment offered to help a student meet college expenses. If a student only wants scholarships and does not want to complete the FAFSA, let the Financial Aid Office know so that we award without FAFSA data.

Do I have everything turned in for my financial aid?

If you have not yet bee awarded financial aid, either complete the FAFSA or let the Financial Aid Office know if you will not be doing the FAFSA. If you have bee awarded financial aid, check MyBethel Checklist for items that still need to be completed.

Can I attend classes if I have not received Financial Aid yet?

Yes. Make sure the student account balance will be affordable to make payments on if you are not using Financial Aid.

What Happens to my financial aid if I move off campus?

There is no decrease in gift aid if a student moves off campus, however, sometimes the off campus budget is a lesser dollar amount so a revision is needed. Usually there is a reduction in the private loan eligibility.

What happens to my financial aid if I drop/withdraw from a course?

If you withdraw from a course during the semester, talk to your Financial Aid Couneslor because it could impact other semesters, reduce the amount of scholarships/grants for the current semester--or it may have no impact at all.

When or how do I get my overage check if I can see that I have a credit on my student account?

I need some of my aid now to pay for books. How can I get those funds?

Contact the Business Office to request a check if you have extra funds on the student account.

If I add more credits, how much will my Pell and/or Minnesota State Grant increase by?

For CAS students, Pell and MN State Grants are locked on the 10th day of class. For CAPS students, adding or decreasing the amount of credits in a semester may affect the Pell or State Grant. Check with your Financial Aid Counselor for details. Email: finaid@bethel.edu.

After the 10th day of class, it is too late to add credits for state grant purposes. Talk with your Financial Aid Counselor prior to the 10th day for details about the state grant credits and dollars.

Why am I not eligible for MN State Grant/Pell Grant this year if I have received it in the past?

MN State Grant and Pell Grant is based on EFC (Estimated Family Contribution according to FAFSA), and if the EFC is higher this year than prior years, the student is not eligible for the grant(s).

Is there any possible way I can qualify for more aid? The gap between my cost of attendance and award letter is too much.

Bethel Financial Aid Office sends the best award offer (CAS students). If there has been a loss in job or unusual expense in the family causing a gap in funds, please submit an appeal.

My FAFSA does not reflect my current financial situation, what can I do?

You will need to submit an appeal.

My parents don't support me at all, why do I need to provide their information on the FAFSA?

FAFSA considers the student to be dependent if the student is under the age of 24, not married, without dependent children and not homelss/ward of the court/orphaned, etc. Thus a dependent student must include parent information even if the parent does not offer financial support.

How much in loans should I take out for my classes each semester?

For CAPS/GS/Seminary take the amount of credits you plan to take for the year and multiply by the tuition rate for your program. Keep in mind that the loan is split evenly over all semesters.

Where do I find a private loan?

Go to https://www.bethel.edu/financial-aid/. Click on Apply for Aid. Click on Types of Aid. Click on Loans. Click on Private loans to view the list of preferred lenders and view the link to apply.

When will my loan disburse?

CAS/Seminary: If loan documents are all submitted, the loan disbursement dates are as follows: August 21, 2017 fall semester, January 2 or 3, 2018 (for those taking interim) spring semester, January 29 or 31 for those not taking interim, May 29, 2018 summer semester; CAPS/GS: The loans will disburse on the first day of the first class taken in either the fall/spring/summer. There are usually three disbursements (one each semester).

If the semester has already started or you have started the first class in the semester, allow two weeks.

How do I change the amount of my student loans?

Email the Financial Aid Office OR complete the loan change form available in the Financial Aid Office.

If I am not attending classes in the summer, how do I change my loan disbursements?

Contact the Financial Aid Office in order to request a loan disbursement change. In order to update the loan, the request for a loan change needs to be in writing by sending an email.

How do I know what loans I have taken out?

For federal loans: Visit National Student Loan Data System. Contact your private loan servicer for information about any private loans taken. If you are not sure about private loans taken, contact your Financal Aid Counselor at 651-638-6241.

Who is my lender for my Federal Student Loans?

You can see your federal loan servicer at National Student Loan Data System.

How do I contact my lender?

For federal loans log into National Student Loan Data System. Contact your private loan servicer for information about a private loan taken. If not sure about private loans borrowed, contact your Financial Aid Counselor at 651-638-6241.

How much total have I taken out in federal loans?

You can see your federal loan history at National Student Loan Data System.

When and how do I start paying back my loans?

For most loans, repayment will start after graduation or after falling below half time status.

What happens to my financial aid if I receive an outside scholarship?

Outside scholarships may reduce Bethel gift aid if it causes the total gift aid to exceed tuition, room, board, books and supplies.

I have an outside scholarship, where do I bring the check?

The check can be brought to the Financial Aid Office (RC326) or Business Office (5th floor of Anderson) or drop it in the secure dropbox by the campus store.

What is the 1098-T form and where do I get it?

It is a tax form that lists tuition expenses and scholarships received. For access to the form:

Financial Aid Counselors are assigned based on geographical area. Usually students cannot change to a different counselor.
